Programs of Study
The program focuses on giving all teachers targeted instruction in general education. More specifically, the program works with elementary and middle school teachers across the four content areas (English, Math, Science and Social Studies). High school teachers who teach one or more of the four content areas may also find the program relevant to their own instruction.
Faculty
The program is primarily taught by Relay GSE’s Managing Director of Teaching and Learning in Newark, James Verrilli, co-founder of North Star Academy Charter School of Newark and former principal of its Downtown Middle School. Mr. Verrilli has been a history teacher and principal to Newark students for twenty-five years.
Joining Mr. Verrilli is Nichelle Bowes, an instructional fellow, who has been a teacher and leader in Newark public schools for the past nine years, and multiple content-specific adjunct instructors who have demonstrated excellence and leadership in the teaching profession. They currently teach and lead at some of the highest performing urban schools in Newark.
Location
Relay GSE Newark is located within North Star Academy Downtown Middle School.
Certification
Upon entering the program, enrolled teachers are given a provisional certificate to teach in New Jersey public schools. Enrolled teachers who successfully complete the 200-hour program, and the 90-hour program, if applicable, will receive a standard certificate to teach in New Jersey public schools. Relay GSE plans to have its master's program available in New Jersey in the future.
Resources
All enrolled teachers have full access to the Relay GSE Library. The Relay GSE Library is accessible online and provides 24/7 access to journals, electronic books focused on K-12 education, Relay GSE produced videos, K-12 curriculum materials, and Relay GSE curriculum materials.
