Transition to Teaching

Transition to Teaching is an abbreviated program of pedagogy created by Indiana lawmakers to prepare career professionals with bachelor degrees to teach elementary education, secondary classes, or all-grade classes. Qualified individuals may enroll as non-degree candidates at institutes of higher education or with approved non-higher education institution entities to pursue a program of courses and experiences to lead to licensure. All of Relay GSE’s programs are approved Transition to Teaching programs in Indiana, authorized by the Indiana State Board of Education. (MAT students meet the Transition to Teaching requirements in the first year of their program).

The Relay Approach

Relay launched our first teacher preparation program in Indiana in the summer 2019 with 11 residency students. In the 2021-22 school year, Relay Indiana supported 105 students in residency and non-residency master’s programs. In 2022-23, we will launch a one year alternative licensure program specifically designed as a part of the Transition to Teaching program (MAT students also complete Transition to Teaching requirements in the first year of their program)

Relay Indianapolis prioritizes establishing strong relationships between our faculty and students. Our program team consists of veteran local educators that uniquely understand the responsibility placed on the shoulders of our novice teachers. The relationships built in the classrooms are strengthened during school visits and office hours held at local coffee shops.

Faculty

Relay has nearly 200 experienced, supportive faculty across our campuses. Here is one example of a faculty member who teaches and advises our Indiana students:
