Message from President Hostetter
NEW YORK, June 17, 2020— Relay Graduate School of Education President Dr. Mayme Hostetter shared today the following statement on the Supreme Court’s ruling to uphold employment protections for LGBTQ+ individuals.
“This week, the U.S. Supreme Court declared that who you are and who you love cannot limit what you can accomplish professionally.
This historic civil rights decision is a major victory for LGBTQ+ rights, and ensures no one loses their job because of who they love or how they identify. Educators can now be free from fear of losing their jobs and our schools can be safe and welcoming places for LGBTQ+ students where they are supported to learn and thrive.
Relay is committed to ensuring that every student in the U.S., regardless of background or geography, has access to an excellent education. Research shows that students are more successful when they see themselves in and can relate to their teachers. This decision supports the rich diversity of teachers and principals we need to lead the charge for a brighter future.
As our country comes face-to-face with centuries of oppression, racism and discrimination, we take a moment to celebrate this long overdue but crucial moment in history.”
