On March 4th, 2023, America's Black Forum, a lifestyle magazine TV show, produced a segment on a pressing issue in education - the shortage of Black teachers. As cited in the piece, 15% of U.S. public school students are Black while only 7% of U.S. public school teachers are Black, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. And yet, research has shown that having Black teachers can have a noticeably positive impact on Black students' outcomes.

Host Marc Morial introduces us to the principal and a teacher at LEARN Excel Charter School in Chicago, who explain how Relay's teacher residency program is helping create a pathway for Black teachers. Relay Chicago Executive Director Vince Gay discusses how our residency model helps teachers overcome financial barriers to entering teaching.

America's Black Forum is a weekly nationally syndicated show, available online and on channels such as WMAQ, the NBC affiliate in Chicago; KXAS, the COZI/ NBC affiliate in Dallas- Fort Worth; and WATL in Atlanta.

Read more from Vince about how to recruit and support Black teachers.
